The world bank states "in 2013, 10.7 percent of the world’s population lived on less than US$1.90 a day" which is $2.54 CAD a day or around $970 CAD a year. The Canada without Poverty website states "1 in 7 (or 4.9 million) people in Canada live in poverty" and that Canada pays between $72 billion and $84 billion each year to cover poverty costs. "In Ontario has hovered between 9% to just over 12%", this includes the recession of 1992. It is stated in the Poverty Free Ontario website that an adult that receives minimum wage and works full time will still not be able to get out of poverty. In my personal opinion, poverty is a result of two different factors. One of these factors is personal choices, for example, kids who have the opportunity to go to school and receive a good education in order to get a good job but instead decide to drop this opportunity. For this reason when they are older they cannot receive a stable job with good pay because of their lack of education. The second reason for poverty is due to the economic factor of the world. The world is run by the richest and most powerful people, more money means more power. If we ended world poverty than there would be more people who have the chance to become rich and powerful, therefore we keep people in these horrid situations in order to maintain the labels of social and economical class.
The food my group made was Spider-Devilled Eggs on a bed of spinach leaves and tomatoes. This means that our dish contains not 1, not 2, but three "superfoods" (tomatoes, spinach and eggs), which are all considered nutraceuticals because they all have food additives that help your health in a way. E.x Spinach leaves and tomatoes are a great source of anti-oxidants and Eggs contain Omega 3. The eggs used in our dish were organic eggs, and to "devil" we used mayonnaise and mustard which was available from Blyth.
Directions
Boil egg for 10 - 12 minutes
While egg is boiling:
on a large plate, add spinach leaves and tomatoes
Cut a black olive in half, make sure to cut around the seed and dispose of it after
Cut the other half into eight small slices
Make sure to cut two olives for every one egg you boil
After egg is done boiling:
After carefully taking out the eggs with a metal spoon, place on a plate and let cool for 2-5 minutes
With a different metal spoon gently crack the outside of the egg and cut lengthwise.
Scoop out yolk with a big metal spoon and place in a small bowl
Do this for each egg
Add and stir in mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper
Remove the shell from the egg and place in the plate with spinach and tomato
Put yolk mix back in each egg with a metal spoon
Place one half of the olive on the mashed yolk
Place the small slices of olive around the egg
Serve
One of the problems we faced while making this recipe was with the eggs. It was very difficult to take off the shell of each egg without breaking one or two, and it took us a while to figure out how to carefully take off the shells without breaking the egg whites. Although boiling the egg was a very easy task and we got it right on the first try.
Although we were supplied with many of our ingredients for this recipe, someone with low socio-economic status would not have access to everything that we had. An example of this is the mustard and mayonnaise, these are condiments that are not used in everyday cooking and many people find it very unnecessary to purchase these because even though it is 1 dollar a bottle, that one dollar can be spent or saved up to buy other things such as spices or cooking oil that actually will be used in everyday cooking. If we had an extra two dollars I do not think we would have changed anything. Since most of our ingredients were already supplied we were under the limit and still managed to add spinach and tomatoes for aesthetic purposes.
I would not recommend this recipe to students mainly because its more of a dish you serve at parties in order to set a theme. Making this and bringing it to school would be very redundant since the entire purpose of this recipe is it's Halloween aesthetic and how it looks when served. Instead, one could use all the same ingredients to make a salad with devilled eggs on the side.
Living in a low-income family can not only affect a teenagers diet but their school and social life as well. If you live in a family with very little money, you may feel obligated to go out and get a job in order to be able to afford your wants and maybe even help out your family with everyday things such as bills or buying groceries. For this reason, a teenager may work over 25 hours per week which will not only affect the hours the teenager spends studying and doing homework but the amount of sleep they get each night. It will also affect their social life and stop them from being able to see their friends or go to social gatherings because they feel the need to make extra money. This will play a huge role on the teenagers optimum health.
